Home offices, remodeled kitchens, EV chargers, pools, spas, and additional HVAC equipment can all increase electrical demand. Even when these improvements are added years apart, they eventually share the same electrical service. Evaluating the complete system can help determine when dedicated circuits or additional capacity are appropriate.
Gilbert’s summer heat adds another consideration because air conditioning can run for extended periods while pool equipment and outdoor electrical systems are also operating. Before adding another major load, it can be helpful to understand how much capacity the home is already using.

Erik with Nugen Electric came over and fixed an electrical issue we had been struggling with for the passed 6 years. Our home was a new build and even the warranty electric company couldn't figure out the problem and would just replace an outlet here and there. After that, they would no longer respond to our calls. The power in our living room, bathroom, garage and backyard patio would always go out, tripping the breaker. I swapped the breaker out and replaced multiple outlets but no luck. Erik came through and located the issue. Finally we can turn the fan on and the bathroom light at the same time without worrying the power would shut off. I give Nugen Electric 2 thumbs up and Nugen Electric will definitely be my go to for any electrical issues. I highly recommend Nugen Electric.Posted on Google![]()

Updating Gilbert Electrical Systems for Today's Demands
An established home does not necessarily need a complete electrical overhaul to support modern living. Sometimes a dedicated circuit, targeted wiring update, or other improvement is enough. Other properties may benefit from a panel upgrade if electrical demand has grown substantially since the system was installed.
Remodeling provides a good opportunity to evaluate these needs. If walls are already being opened or a room is changing purpose, homeowners can consider outlets, lighting, appliance circuits, home office equipment, and future technology before finishes are installed.
Outdoor electrical systems also deserve attention. Pools, spas, landscape features, exterior lighting, and EV chargers may be exposed to extreme heat and seasonal storms. Proper electrical protection and equipment selection are important, and whole-home surge protection can provide another layer of protection against damaging voltage spikes.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I know if my Gilbert home has enough electrical capacity for new equipment?
An electrical load evaluation can determine whether your existing electrical service has enough capacity for additional equipment such as an EV charger, spa, new appliance, or HVAC system.
An electrician will consider the major electrical loads already being served, along with the requirements of the new equipment. These can include:
- Air conditioning
- Pool and spa equipment
- Electric appliances
- EV charging
- Home office equipment
- Planned additions or remodeling
Adding new equipment does not automatically mean the electrical panel needs to be replaced. Evaluating the complete load first can help determine whether the existing system is adequate, a dedicated circuit is needed, or additional electrical capacity should be considered.
What electrical upgrades should I consider during a home remodel?
A home remodel is a good time to consider electrical improvements that would be more difficult to complete after walls, cabinets, and finishes are installed.
Depending on the project, homeowners may want to evaluate:
- Outlet and switch locations
- Dedicated appliance circuits
- Lighting and lighting controls
- Home office electrical needs
- Panel capacity
- Future EV charging or outdoor equipment
Remodeling an established Gilbert home can also reveal wiring or electrical components installed during previous projects. Having an electrician evaluate the existing system can help determine what should remain, what needs to be updated, and how the new electrical work should integrate with the rest of the home.
Can a home office require electrical upgrades?
Yes, a home office can require electrical improvements if computers, monitors, printers, networking equipment, and other devices place more demand on an existing circuit than it was intended to handle.
Potential improvements can include:
- Additional outlets
- Dedicated circuits
- Improved lighting
- Surge protection
- New wiring for a remodeled office
- Electrical capacity for added equipment
Extension cords and power strips can add convenience, but they are not a substitute for adequate permanent wiring when a room consistently needs more outlets or electrical capacity.
If breakers trip or an office depends heavily on extension cords and adapters, an electrician can evaluate whether additional outlets or circuits would provide a safer and more practical setup.
Do I need a panel upgrade before installing a Level 2 EV charger?
A panel upgrade is not automatically required for a Level 2 EV charger, but the home's available electrical capacity should be evaluated before installation.
Important factors include:
- Existing electrical service size
- Current household electrical load
- Available breaker space
- Charger requirements
- Air conditioning demand
- Pool, spa, and other major equipment
The location of the charger also matters because the distance from the electrical panel can affect the installation.
An electrical evaluation can determine what is actually required rather than assuming the panel needs replacement. If sufficient capacity is available, the charger may be installed without a service upgrade. If capacity is limited, the available options can be discussed before work begins.
How can I protect appliances and electronics from monsoon-related power surges?
Whole-home surge protection can provide an additional layer of protection against voltage spikes that may occur during storms, utility events, or power interruptions.
Modern homes contain sensitive electronics in more places than many homeowners realize. Surge protection can help protect equipment such as:
- Air conditioning systems
- Refrigerators and other appliances
- Televisions and computers
- Smart-home equipment
- Pool and spa controls
- EV charging equipment
Plug-in surge protectors can still be useful for individual devices, but whole-home protection works at the electrical service to help protect multiple circuits.
No surge protector can eliminate every risk, but surge protection can be a practical electrical safety improvement for homes with increasingly expensive electronic equipment.
What does NuGen Electric's Circuit Saver Club include?
The Circuit Saver Club provides preventative electrical maintenance and additional service benefits for homeowners who want to stay ahead of potential electrical concerns.
Membership includes:
- A comprehensive annual electrical inspection
- 15% off electrical services
- $250 off recommended service updates
- Priority scheduling
- Two free emergency calls per year
- Free smoke detector battery replacement
The annual inspection provides an opportunity to identify developing concerns and review how the home's electrical demands are changing.
For Gilbert homeowners who gradually add EV chargers, pools, spas, home office equipment, appliances, or remodeled spaces, regular electrical inspections can also provide a useful checkpoint for discussing capacity, maintenance, and future improvements.
